Baby formula
isn’t what it once was, it’s even better! Today, baby
formula comes in a variety of choices from milk to soy to organic
formula. Over the last few years, non-dairy based formulas have
become more popular and more mainstream. Soy based formulas are
great for babies that can’t tolerate dairy or who spit up
often.
The great thing about baby formula is that it’s quick and
easy, and it stores and travels well. Unfortunately, unlike breast
milk, baby formula isn't free. In fact, baby formula can be quite
expensive. It is, however, possible to find discounted dairy formula
in large retail stores such as Costco and Wal-Mart. And realize
that soy and organic formulas will always cost more than dairy
formulas.
All baby formulas must meet FDA requirements, and this means
they all must meet certain nutritional requirements. But this
doesn't mean all formulas are created equal! There are many different
formulas to choose from, and there is not necessarily one that
is better than another. However, it is best to purchase a formula
that has DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and ARA (Arachidonic Acid).
DHA and ARA are fatty acids found in breast milk which help boost
the baby’s brain development. Some formulas have it and
some don’t, so be sure to check. Also, be sure ask your
doctor which baby formula would be best to use.
Baby formula is also great to use when you need to mix milk with
cereal and other foods when the baby is learning to eat. It is
also great for working mothers whose work environment is not conducive
to breast pumping.
Baby formula is a great alternative for mothers who cannot or
do not want to breast feed. Most mothers use a combination of
breast milk and formula. However, before you decide to use baby
formula instead of breast milk, take note that breast milk is
still the best food for your baby in terms of nutrition and other
health benefits, like the passing of antibodies from mother to
baby.
