If you plan on breastfeeding your baby, you need a breastfeeding
bra. Sure, you can make due with a regular bra, but it would
be a great hassle. Besides, you are going to be a different
cup size than you used to be – you are going to have to
buy a new bra anyhow, might as well make it a breastfeeding
one. Of course, the question is, what sort of breastfeeding
bra should you get? Here are some tips:
- Get measured – First of all,
as abovementioned, you are not the same cup size as you used
to be. And it can be difficult to guess. So, be sure to get
measured to ensure that you purchase a bra with the best fit.
- Try it on – You can tell a lot
by trying on a breastfeeding bra. You can see what it looks
like and how comfortable it is. Try it on, and then put a shirt
on over so that you can see what it will look like on a daily
basis. Move around and make sure it moves with you.
- Easy to unlatch? – One of the
key features of a breastfeeding bra is that it is easy to unhook.
You want to be sure that you buy a bra is easy to open (with
one hand) when you have a hungry baby complaining at your side.
- Enough room for nursing pads
- Cotton bras – Wearing a cotton
bra can decrease your chances of getting thrush, a yeast infection
of the nipples caused by dampness.
- Good support – You definitely
do not want any back strain!
- Underwire? – It is generally
recommended to avoid wearing an underwire breastfeeding bra
because they have been known to lessen milk production. But
if you get one that fits well, and do not notice a reduction
in milk production, go for it!
- More than one – You should get
3-4 nursing bras, no less than 2. Remember that you will likely
leak some breast milk…
- Full opening? – For some women,
it can be difficult to get their breast back into a nursing
bra that exposes the entire breast.
- When to buy – Buy it during the
late stages of your pregnancy. Keep in mind that your breasts
will get a little bit fuller as they fill with milk –
it can be a good idea to get a breastfeeding bra that gives
you room to grow.
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and buy yourself
a breastfeeding bra (or 3 or 4… if you are in the late
stages of your pregnancy)!
