Whether you rent or buy a breastfeeding pump, you want to always make sure it is clean. Therefore, when renting a breastfeeding pump, look for one with which you must buy your own kit to attach: look for one that will not have come in contact with the milk of any mother, since the milk is only run through the pieces of the kit, not the machine. A breastfeeding pump is a medical instrument; and as with any medical instrument, you want to be sure that it has not been contaminated by another.

If you are looking to buy a breastfeeding pump, make sure that it has easy-to-remove (and reattach) parts. You want to be sure that any parts of the pump that come in contact with your skin or milk can be removed easily for cleaning.
