Breast milk
storage bags make it possible for a mother to be away from
her baby without worrying about her baby not getting enough food.
After all, a mother can pump her breast milk and put it in a breast
milk storage bags (some pumps can pump directly into the storage
bag), and then place the breast milk storage bags in the refrigerator
or freezer for later use.
In fact, it is a good idea to always have at least a little breast
milk stored in the freezer, in case the mother is unexpectedly
called away from her baby. Whenever you place milk in the fridge
or freezer, be sure to label it with the date. This is very important
because while breast milk can last for a relatively long time
when properly stored, it cannot last forever, and you want to
be sure that your baby is getting the best milk possible. So,
how long can breast milk last?
· Room temperature – do not leave breast milk at
room temperature for longer than 4-8 hours.
· Refrigerator – breast milk can stay safe in the
fridge for 3-8 days. If you know it will not be used within this
time, transfer the milk (in a freezer-safe breast milk storage
bag) into the freezer.
· Freezer – up to 6 months (but it is best if you
use it within 3-4 months). Take note: once the frozen milk has
been thawed, do not refreeze it!
When storing your breast milk, store only small portions in your
breast milk storage bags. Remember that once the frozen milk has
thawed, it should not be refrozen – smaller portions means
less wasted milk. Also realize that other containers besides breast
milk storage bags can be used to store breast milk (this is especially
important to realize if you want to cut down on waste). Even sterilized
baby food jars can be used in lieu of breast milk storage bags.
