An electric
breast pump can be quite an investment – after all,
they are generally more expensive than their manual and battery-operated
counterparts. So, before you buy an electric breast pump, make
sure that it has the features that you want:
- Adjustability – To ensure that
the pump is as comfortable as possible, ensure that the vacuum
that latches onto the areola s adjustable. Different women find
different settings more comfortable.
- Dual pump? – Consider getting
a dual electric breast pump. Rather than having to take the
extra time to pump one breast and then the other, you can express
milk from both breasts at the same time with a dual pump. Also,
a dual (double capacity) breast pump can trick a woman’s
body into thinking she has twins, thereby increasing milk supply.
- Efficiency – The more cycles
per minute, the less time you will have to spend expressing
your milk. A “cycle” is the sucking and then releasing
motion of a pump.
- Other features – Other features
that some mothers really appreciate with their electric breast
pumps is a car lighter charger.
- Carrying case – If you are taking
your pump to work or anywhere else with you, you want to be
sure that it is easy to take along – you do not want it
to be too bulky, and you want to have a convenient carrying
case.
- Good price – While the least
expensive electric pumps can cost less than $100, you may pay
for them in other ways (discomfort, less efficiency, break-downs,
etc.). A pump between $100 and $200 can often be a good deal.
But you can expect that the most expensive electric pumps will
come with the most features. Whether or not the added efficiency
and extra features is worth the hefty price tag is often a personal
decision.
- Rental? – You can rent a hospital-grade
electric breast pump. If you plan on only needing a pump for
part of your breastfeeding months, and/or if you do not plan
on needing one in the future, a rental is often the best decision.
While you may not realize it right now, extra features that
make an electric breast pump more comfortable or more efficient
will really be appreciated down the road.
