There is no single “best
breast pump” out on the market today. Rather, there
are multiple “best breast pumps” – one may be
best for one mother while another may be the best for another
mother. Which is the best breast pump for you depends greatly
on your individual needs.
For instance, whether or not you plan to go back to work or school
full-time or part-time (or not at all) can make a big difference
as to the which is the best breast pump for you. After all, while
hospital grade electric breastfeeding pumps are the most efficient
and effective, they are also the most expensive and therefore
not the best choice for many moms. For a stay-at-home mother who
will rarely need to express milk, such pumps are likely not worth
their price.
On the other hand, while a manual pump is the most inexpensive,
it is also one of the least efficient models, and it can lead
to hand fatigue if used often and/or for extended periods of time.
For a mother going back to work full-time or even part time, a
manual pump is most definitely not the best breast pump.
So, as you can tell already, two major factors that play into
the decision as to which breast pump to get are the price of the
pump and the work status of the mother. Other factors that a mother
might consider are:
· Efficiency – how many suction and release cycles
per minute does the pump have?
· Adjustability – are the speeds and suction adjustable?
· Comfort – are the breast shields the right size?
Can I change the shield to fit me better? Does it hurt?
· Dual capacity – can I use it to pump both breasts
at the same time?
· Clean – is it easy to take apart and clean?
· Portability – is it light? Does it come with a
tote?
· Accessories – can I plug it into my car cigarette
lighter? Can it be used with a batter pack? Does it come with
bottles and other accessories?
· Features – does it have a date and time feature
(and do I need one?) Will it tell me which breast I pumped last
and for how long?
· Noise – is it quiet? Will everyone at the office
know I am using it?
· Discreet – can I express milk while talking on
the phone and working at my computer?
· Warranty – will the pump last as long as I need
it to?
Not all of the abovementioned factors are important to women
– in general, mothers must find a balance of what is important
to them if they want to find the best breast pump possible. They
must decide whether they can make due without certain features
in favor of a better price. They must decide if a little extra
weight and less portability is worth additional efficiency, etc.
In conclusion, the best breast pump for you depends on many factors.
