For many woman, shopping for a bra is more of a hassle than a
treat: unfortunately, the same can usually be said about shopping
for nursing bras. In fact, many women find it even more difficult
to shop for a nursing
bra than any other bra. However, with a little help and advice,
shopping for nursing bras can be fun:
· Underwire? – If you are not used to underwire
bras, don’t wear one. However, if you prefer or need the
extra support that underwire nursing bras give, get one. Just
make sure that the bra is very comfortable, and you do not want
the underwire to be too tight – it could cut down on your
milk production.
· Access – There are many types of nursing bras out
there: ones with flaps and ones that are pulled aside to expose
the breast. The latter are not quite as supportive, but generally
less expensive. If you buy a bra with flaps, be sure that it is
very easy to unlatch and relatch the clasps… with one hand.
You are likely going to be holding your hungry baby, and frustration
can ensue if your bra is difficult to open up.
· Measurement – When the store representative asked
you if you want to be measured, go ahead and say “yes.”
After all, your body has changed a lot. You are not likely wearing
the same size bra that you used to!
· Adjustability – Your bra size may change –
therefore, it is a great idea to get nursing bras that allow for
change. They may have very adjustable straps and closures as well
as flaps that can be adjusted to fit larger breasts.
· Sleeping – It is ok to sleep in your bra (and many
women find it comfortable to do so). But you do not want to sleep
in your underwire bra.
· More than one – You are going to want more than
one bra. Trust us on this!
· Style – More manufacturers are making more stylish
nursing bras – go ahead and get one. It will feel great
to put on a leopard print bra before going out on that date!
So, go out there and find yourself a nursing bra that you love.
And if you can’t find one that you love, at least find one
that is comfortable and easy to use. The best time to shop for
a breastfeeding bra is during the last stages of your pregnancy.
